This Sunday, 29 May 2016, I will be presenting a keynote paper for ‘Mediating cityscapes’, a symposium being held as part of the Artists’ Film Biennial at the Institute of Contemporary Arts. My paper – titled ‘The media-urban nexus: histories, stakes, possibilities’ – will be an attempt to open up some broad themes around what sorts of perspectives thinking about media-urban relationship might open up for academic thinking as well as arts and media practice, particularly in relation to the twin themes of ‘fragments’ and ‘publics’. I have pasted my abstract below, but do take a look at the main ICA listing for the full details. Also, note that I apparently have the ability to list a few ‘comped’ guests, so please get in touch with me if you are interested!
The media-urban nexus: histories, stakes, possibilities
This talk provides an overview of the histories, stakes and possibilities of the ‘media-urban nexus’. As a notion, the media-urban nexus points to, on the one hand, how the practices, rhythms and motilities of urban living compel certain uses, exposures and desires in relation to media; and on the other hand, how media forms, infrastructures, and industries inhabit and are increasingly ‘built-into’ urban environments. Thinking in these terms provides a way of understanding both emergent forms of mediated fragmentation, as well as emergent forms of mediated publics.
